In another part of my website, under "Definitions", I went into detail of my definitions of the half moon trait. I originally began by referring to it as a gene. I was corrected. I was told it is a series of several genes, and so therefore the proper nomenclature is "trait" for this caudal characteristic. Half moons are not acquired by breeding super deltas to super deltas, if they do not carry the trait in their background. I began pursuing the trait five years ago by purchasing three Black HMx STMs. The seller would not sell me a female but he did offer me several "sibling" super delta females from the same spawn. I carefully examined all the females for any "straight edges" on the outside rays of their caudals. There was one Royal Blue female that did have the appearance of an upper straight edge caudal ray. I spawned her to all of the males. The fry were brought to juvenile size and I went to work looking through all of the "super delta fry" for the characteristics I was seeking. I kept the best four fish from this spawn (F-1) and culled the rest. I spawned them together and it was here, in the (F-2) generation that I saw about 3% of the bettas displaying the traits I was seeking. I kept the best four bettas and culled the rest. I spawned this group, (F-3), brother to sister and the resulting fry showed me about 10% with the HM and HMx traits. It was around the (F-8) generation of inbreeding that I began to see 40% of the fry showing me the HM traits. With 40% of the spawn .to work with, it became easier to select the best of the best. By now, it was time to consider future outcrossing to some other strains. I did this and came back to my beginning strain. I also began crossing double tails into the HMx strain to increase the rays in the caudals and dorsals. This helped but it took another two generations to see my caudals again with the straight edges but I even saw several double tails that had good straight edges also. I do believe this "trait" is highly recessive and if you take a good half moon male to a female with no HM background then it can disappear with the next generation. Now, I add a new word to my article, and to my thinking, based upon my years of experience.
